The Fellowship Foot Illustration — The latest discipleship tool from The Navigators
The Navigators History Department has recently made an exciting discovery while reading through the journals of Dawson Trotman, the founder of the ministry. At the time of his passing he was working on a new discipleship tool: The Fellowship Foot Illustration. We have completed his unfinished concept, and today we are proud to share it with you.
1 John 1:7 (ESV) — But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
One beautiful reality of Christian fellowship is the freedom to stop wearing masks, to reveal who we really are and what we struggle with. Walking in the light is transformational as anyone who has taken those steps of faith will attest, especially for that one guy who completely derails your Bible study with a story that feels like it’s never going to end.
More than Hanging Out
Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV) — And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
This exhortation reminds us there is a purpose to fellowship beyond just hanging out: stirring each other up and encouraging each other in our Christian walk. Every group has two or three people who will remind you how much less spiritual it is to "just hang out," so this one should be easy to remember. And it’s consistency in these things, not giving up on meeting together, that brings about true community.
1 John 1:3 (NIV) — We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
With the previous toe in mind, strong communication is essential to make consistent fellowship possible. After all, fellowship doesn’t just happen. It takes work gathering people together in one place, and sending an impersonal message to the masses always gets the job done.
Wholesome Group Games
2 Timothy 2:5 (ESV) — An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
Whether it’s Apples to Apples, picture telephone, or Spikeball, there’s nothing like friendly, non-threatening competition to bring people together. Because everyone knows it’s not about winning, it’s about finally drawing out what’s just below the surface of the quiet ones in the group.
Acts 2:42 (ESV) — And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Don’t let the size of the pinky toe fool you. Nothing brings out people—especially freshmen—to a time of fellowship faster than pizza they didn’t have to pay for.
1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV) — So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
The heel puts this foot into motion, and caffeine for so many of us is the only thing keeping us moving. It is an invaluable piece to true biblical fellowship. It stretches one's ability to continue to fellowship for longer periods. Whether it’s drip coffee, an overpriced latte, or a two liter of Mountain Dew, without caffeine these toes would be going nowhere.
The Navigators ministry is so thankful to have found this lost treasure. We encourage you to meditate on these truths so that you will be fully equipped to extend the right foot of fellowship to those in your community.
